The Art of Alignment: What I’m Thinking When I Design

I wanted to take a moment to pull back the curtain on the thought process—the endless brainstorming and quiet sketches—that marks the beginning of every new Michino piece.

In our digital age, it often feels as though we’ve all become designers in our own way. We curate our lives, carefully selecting how we wish to be perceived by the world. But beyond the sketches I put to paper, my specific contribution lies in the nuances: the technical knowledge of leather craftsmanship and those intricate details that often feel impossible to explain.

I say "inexplicable" because for every rule in bag-making, there is usually a contradictory one waiting just around the corner. Every decision depends entirely on the specific temper of the leather, the machinery available, or the unique rhythm of the manufacturing process. Perhaps "talent" isn't even the right word for it—it is more about a relentless consistency. It’s the commitment to learning the subject, and more importantly, everything that surrounds it.

This brings me to a question I ask myself every day: What truly makes a great bag?

The silhouette is only the beginning. A truly exceptional piece requires a deep internal harmony. Is the material actually suited to the shape? Does the stitching technique respect the weight of the leather? Does the meticulous preparation behind the scenes justify the final price? When a bag is successful, it is because every one of these technical elements is perfectly aligned.

However, there is one final piece of the puzzle, and it is perhaps the most vital.

Even the most beautiful bag in the world is only "great" if it aligns with your personal style. If it doesn’t feel like a natural extension of who you are, it loses its spark the moment you carry it. At Michino, we obsess over the quality, the materials, and the technical balance—but that is only 90% of the journey.

The final bit of magic? That comes from you.

Knowing how to choose what resonates with your own life is the secret ingredient. That personal connection is what transforms a beautiful object into your most precious possession.
